Social Life without chiefs

  1. Why don’t societies with reciprocity (define) need true leaders?

To understand the aspect that “why the societies with reciprocity do not need true leader”, there is need to understand the concept of reciprocity. The reciprocity is the practice of exchanging or sharing things with others on base of the mutual benefits of both parties. In this aspect, the reciprocal societies people exchange things with each other and they do not specify that how much or what they expect to get back or when they expect to get it. Therefore in reciprocity practice, people do care each other and values other as they believe that others value them, therefore, the societal system remains continue with a balance therefore it does not need a true leader to run the society.

  1. What are headmen and “Big Men” and how doe they exert leadership?  What are their limits?

To extent the political leadership that exists among the band-and-village societies, it is usually exercised by a person known headmen; however, the headmen do not have enough power to compel other to follow their order. This aspect, raise a question in mind that in what ways a leader be powerless and with no power still he lead a society. There are no certain means of punishing those who disobey a headman therefore, if a headman want to continue his rule, he should compromise with few commands.

On the other hand the concept of big in political aspect is defined as a person who is highly influential in a tribe, group of society however, he may not hold any formal authority but he manage to influence others with his status, his skilled precaution and wisdom. He has a large group of people who follows him who are with him for his wisdom and for their own purpose of protection or economic benefits.
