Case Analysis On Group Process in the Challenger Launch Decision

The three places were used first time in history from where three different individuals used different locations and communication happened successfully before the origin of NASA. After the concept of telecommunication, the whole procedure was completed under the given circumstances and throughstrict rules and regulations. The challenger that was the first launch by NASA was administered under the supervision of strict regulation. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the brand of United States, was created in 1958. As this was the response of aggression, the current development this brand is going through were not forecasted.

Question No 1: Conditions of external environment

The NASA launch was itself as a response to aggression assmall chunks of angry behavior ofthe two poles of that world. This was the main consideration that was behind the launch by the NASA and the reaction was quite notable at that time. Military and culture dominance at NASA assured that the objective. The external conditionsbehindincorporation of NASA were not the same as it is currently endorsed by the government. They provided billions of dollars as grantsfor NASA in hope of beating their inherent enemy in the field of space sciences. Exploring of the space was not easy. However, the problems and endorsements from different departments in the society helped to overcome the challenges that the government confronted at that time.

The Apollo mission to reach the moon was the milestone, which was achieved by the NASA. The Apollo was generously welcomed by the American society. As a result, the society showed the complete faithin the United States government. The second objective,of implicitly beating the enemy in the sky war, was also accomplished.Streamlined with this accomplishment the objective to achieve victory without another major war was also accomplished and now development became the primary priority. The environment is filled with the ability to do the required work for the activities needed. The mission of this race was also to get the support of US Air force,as the force of the American society also wanted the enemy down in science and technology and this was accomplished after space stations idea launch by the authorities. The launch of the space transportation system (STS) happened when the same mindset was shifting towards the space. The timely effort by the authorities of that time realized that this mission is now possible.

Case Analysis On Group Process in the Challenger Launch Decision By: ABC Date Introduction: The three places were used first time in history from where three different individuals used different locations and communication happened successfully before the origin of NASA. Question No 1: Conditions of external environment The NASA launch was itself as a response to aggression assmall chunks of angry behavior ofthe two poles of that world. Question No 2: Roger Boisjoly RogerBoisjoly was an American mechanical engineer who worked with Morton Thiokol and contributed tomajor research through the paradigm shift in space technology, which was observed then by the contemporary engineers. The issue, which came under the decision-making among the groups presented, was their effectiveness. The whole research was done by the Roger Boisjoly himself. Roger Boisjoly was onduty,as the work at that time needed some critical decision making. The issues and the decision-making was totally flawed as per prediction of Roger Boisjoly before the launch. Roger Boisjoly predicted that the previous launch was successful because the launch happened at an optimum temperature of 53 degrees. The temperature was exact, was neither a degree above nor a degree below. Roger Boisjoly said that the chart that was presented here is not showing the same reading of temperature at the time of launch, the reading was extremely low, and according to the prediction, the charts showed that the launch was going to take place at 29 degrees. This was extremely low temperature was going to create a problem during the launch and the situation would be out of control. The same argument was repeatedly pursued by the Roger Boisjoly without the supporting evidence necessary enough to motivate the Larry Malloy. The first step was presented as the equation with the flight 15 behavior at the time of launch and the un-expectable behavior of the issueswere similar in nature but this was not supporting the case. Secondly, theblack color of O-ring was the supporting material in the support. The third step was the relation of blow by which the blow ofO-ring was expected in real times. The first step should have been a more official course of decision making by presenting the data and the assumptions to the senior management at the time rather than talking with the engineer of the same time. The second step that may be taken at that time was to convince the fellows already there when Roger Boisjoly experienced the black color of the O-ring. The third step could have been to bindengineeringwith field, which could have supported his. This would enable a confirmation and buzzing of observation statements by the engineers on other side. Question No 3: Bob Lund Bob Lund was the Vice president for Space boosters at that time because the president was doing the enormous job in defining the work as required. The Bob Lund was of the opinion that the recommendation given by the Roger Boisjoly and the launch must be stopped, although the launch was now at itslast minute but it saved the cost. The first step was the convincing management through recommending in the group decision-making sessions. The recommendation at the times was looking more convincing for the other fellows of managementrather than to stop the launch. The commitmentcriteriawas the image and should not change. With this way, Bob Lund could have convinces others to do a discourse analysis upon the charts and decide whether to launch or not in the opted way. The third convincing argument about the discussion was that the Bob Lund came up with great ideas and responded in reactive way. Bob Lund was the main character in the launch and should have acted in proactive manner rather than recommending the low-level engineers. The memo written by the optimistic person Boisjolyshould have reactedon immediate basis. The launch data is not beyond the access of Lund, thus he could have helped the other fellow engineers who can help in that crucial time. Question No 4: Larry Malloy Larry Malloyis the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC)’s solid rocket booster manager. The Larry Malloy showed extra ordinary communication and launched many new researches in the designing of telecommunication field. The most convincing thing during the arguments sharing process is that Malloy is the data oriented engineer and always think about the data that should be displayed perfectly. The first argument that he laid about the reality of high temperature that the O-ring erosion comes even with the high temperature. The launch cannot be delayed and should be at committed criteria. This is the second justification made by him. The third justificationwas the reference-based discussion that he referenced with previous launches and the threats that are being presented by the fellow engineers in this perspective. The Flight 2 and Flight 22 were the supporting argument that showed the same launching problem with even the highest temperature even. The alternatives that should be adopted to avoid the failure are only realization at that time. The observation as given by the other engineers should be considered based on observation only. The proactive approach should be adopted while having the black picture of O Rings and lastly the Malloy should respect the other observation and did not implement their argument forcefully during such a big decision making process. Question No 5: George Hardy George Hardy was the deputy director of science and engineering at the Marshall Space Flight Center. The recommendation about the launch was given by the Thiokol was sufficient for him about the launch. Now the time had passed and nobody could do anything except waiting. He agreed complete with the Larry Malloy about the launch. He convinced the team to do the work rather than making predictions. Secondly, he made the effort to endorse the discussion between the senior management and thirdly, he ran an objective mindset while providing justification. He did make any point of view own his own and rode on others opinion. He should have done the same observation on his own and thirdly he should behave in ethical way for launch in terms of cost effective manner. Question No 6: Key Problems The basic problem was the problem of low temperature that may be disruptive enough for the launch. The other main issues were the lacking of supporting data, just a night before the launch and could have given riseto fear among people rather than the any meaningful discussion. The engineers present over there showed the pessimistic behavior towards the launch and decision-making communication gap was identified as the basic problem during the discussion of launch. The recommendations were only there but the lacking of data was another issue that was confronted by the NASA. The communication gap between the NASA and the Morton Thiokol was the major challenge and should be carved in the way in order to create a win situation along the way. The observation was also to device a means of research, as the engineers are aware of it. The reliance of supporting data is not only the way to deal with similar problems in the future. The observations of any person in the team should be considered in the future. Conclusion: The major communication gap between two people caused the failure of launch during the decision-making mode of this project. The Larry Malloy of NASA and Roger Boisjoly and Morton Thiokol were of different opinions about the same problem. The wrong understanding about the erosion of O Ring only at Larry Malloy’sunderstanding was the problem otherpeople wanted to comment upon, not blow. References: BIBLIOGRAPHY \l 1033 EDMONDSON, A. C.
