Should SparkPlace go after small Sams, medium Marys, or both?

The main cause of dispute or the issue with decision making is simply deciding upon if the company should focus on more profit or potential of more profit. The certainty leads to the risk adverse decision making while taking decisions where the results are not certain and decision is taken based on merely the speculation or analytical data leads to the risk loving decisions. Thus, in order to resolve the issue, the company must focus on these points. The problem discussed in this case study is basically a decision the company must take in order to constrain its efforts following a single strategy.

The company is a software development company providing solutions for the marketing efforts in the industry. The focus of the company or say, the mission of the company was to provide marketing solutions to potential consumers only, or the consumers interested in the products themselves. This focus is so clearly disseminated to the employees that each and every decision is taken considering the mission of the company. On hand situation described in the case study suggest that the company must make a decision if it should serve the small companies or the medium companies or both. The small and medium companies are referred to Sams and Marys in the case study. Now, the need for choosing between the two options is to strategize the efforts in a single direction. Current statistical data suggests that the company is starting to become more popular in Sams rather than in Marys, whereas the data also determine that the profits are higher from Marys than from Sams. This information is the sole base of decision making process. On the other hand, as the product development for the two markets would be different, therefore the software developer of the company is taken on board with the decision making. The software developer did not provide an exact solution rather he suggested the fall out or the advantages of both the options. He determined that the Marys operate on a larger scale therefore, they can more relate to the company’s product rather than the Sams as their operational scale is small. It is also considered as the mission of the company is to provide simple and easy solutions so that is what their relationship is with the Sams as they are attracted toward the easy and simple solution of the company. The confusion persists in the matter because the advantages and disadvantages for accepting the options outweigh each other and the marketing team stays at point zero.
