Post, S.L. (2014).  Space shuttle case studies: Challenger and Columbia. Proceedings of the 121st ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition.Paper # 8419.  Indianapolis: American Society for Engineering Education.

Code of Ethics

All the members of engineering profession must follow the code of ethics to perform their duties with dignity, honor and integrity. Therefore, engineers working in US must serve their clients, public and employers with honesty and impartiality. One must strive to increase the prestige of profession and should increase the competence. In addition, engineers must work to use their skills and knowledge for the enhancement of human welfare.

Summary

This paper reflects on the ethical dilemma facing the Columbia and challenger space shuttles. This paper discusses the ethical issue with the teleconference which took place between the engineers of Challenger before its takeoff. This paper summarizes the findings of Columbian Accident Investigation Board (CAIB) and Rogers’s commission and provides the overview of the history of the space shuttle program. Besides, it shed light on the some of the designs compromises made by the company to facilitate the political support for the company.

The During the flight, the pressure had escalated beyond the limit and as a consequence, the booster located on  lower level of the field joint opened and it allowed the hot gases to evacuate from there. The Challenger exploded because seal was ruptured due to hot gases and the connection was established between the fuel tank, and booster. With astronauts on board, Challenger started to descend back and finally fell off in Ocean and all the astronauts lost their lives because escape route could not be created.

Analysis

Based on the reasons found out by the investigators, prior to the launch of Challenger, engineers working at NASA had failed to comply by the ethical requirements which resulted in demise of astronauts.
