Examining censorship and Google operations in China

Introduction

This case is about the examination of censorship in china and strategy adopted by Google, Inc to provide search facilities for different entities including government bodies, private organizations as well as academia. Governance of totalitarian laws has imposed   censorship on technology, government information as well as the use of internet. Such censorship has affected Google operations in china. In some areas it was banned or very slowly being operate able. This situation has put Google in troubling situation with financial losses. Google decided to launch another search engine named as Google.cn. This search engine provides searching facility with filtered information. Purpose behind is to provide information without complete ban.

Problem statement

China had prolonged approach towards censorship. Authorities restricted the production as well as development of improper content. Moreover, internet content was also disseminated. Authorities also monitored the content and receipt of the information flooded on the internet. Censorship was imposed on content, such as freedom, religion cult and antigovernment protest. Such censorship also affected Google’s operations. Although Google, Inc was affected by the censorship policy of the China, it did endorse censor ship with Chinese laws.

Environmental analysis

Environmental situation of Google is tough in china. Threats and weakness are at high level as compare to opportunities and strengths. Google decided to offer its service with Google.cn after the restrictions imposed by Chinese government on its content. Chinese citizens better off after Google’s decision to enter China with Google.cn (Web.duke.edu, 2012). This is considered as great strength for the company. Reason behind was the availability of the search engines and access to information with fast and reliable sources. Speed of the Google was reduced in China and users were facing difficulties in accessing the information. This was the major threat for the Google, Inc.

With the launch of Google.cn, Chinese citizens better off after Google’s decision to enter China with Google.cn. They were able to use information which was according to the laws, rules and regulation developed by the Chines local and foreign governments. Therefore, it could be inferred that it was right decision to introduce Google.cn. Organizations, individuals as well as universities of academic sector reap the benefits of that decision.

Information filtered by Google.cn was quiet acceptable for Chinese government. Hence, people essentially and adequately utilized such information for their use. Particularly, academia was greatly benefited with the decision made by the Google.cn. Search results were provided with the consideration of various restricted areas such as technologies, government policies as well as use of internet (Nytimes.com, 2006). Such censorship was controlled on Google.cn to provide searching results which are compliance with laws, rules and regulations formulated and imposed by the China government. Therefore it could be concluded that Chinese citizens better off after Google’s decision to enter China with Google.cn.

Alternative strategy

Google facilities are not in the premises of the China’s physical boundaries and Google was not obliged to take license for its operations in the country. Chinese search engine is also faster than Google. This speed reduction was deliberately imposed the Chinese authorities. Google launched Google.cn to provide search engines with more better and politically secure
