What are the main points of the readings for the week?

In the aesthetics of music, Formalism is the percept, thought or notion, which argues that form meaning, to a music composition, is given by its form. The Absolute Music is interpreted by formalists as composition, which does not represent anything (Formalism, p76). This idea is peculiar and very difficult to comprehend for music novices or for people, who does not understand music theory. As per formalists, pure music or absolute music is highly rich and its composition is free of any plots, narratives and presentations. The structure of pure music is itself voids all espouses, arguments and philosophies. This argument or percept also suggests that a listener must have adequate music knowledge or must understand, to certain extent, music theory to appreciate a musical composition, especially of absolute or pure music (Formalism, p76-77).

The absolute music is comprised of many persistence illusions (Formalism, p78). In addition, the events of music composition have sequence and they repeat. However, in some cases these events do not repeat but rather surprise the listener.  For instance, in the eight symphonies of Beethoven a musical pattern is adhered, according to which, the first movement is rapid or fast, the second is sluggish or leisurely, the third is rapid scherzo and the last movement is rapid again. However, in the ninth symphony the pattern is deliberately disturbed to surprise the listener or to excite him or her (Formalism, p79). This pure structure of music and the repetition of events are used to amuse and excite the listener. Therefore, the claim of the Formalists is true, to some extent, that people, who have fair knowledge of music theory can better appreciate music, when it is in its most pure and absolute form (Formalism, p80).

The pure or absolute music is being compared with fiction, which provokes thoughts and ideas. Like a fiction, pure or absolute music not only excites listener, but also provokes him/her to guess the next event or plot. So again, people with better understand of music theory will better appreciate music in all its form, whether it is in absolute form or not. This knowledge can be gained by simply listening attentively or impassively to music.

The intentional object, which is imperative to understand pure music, augments when try to understand music, rather than use it to sooth our emotions or mitigate stress. The more we will understand music objectively, the more our comprehension of music will augment (Formalism, p86).

How to these ideas compare to your experiences of music?

In the beginning, for me it was hard to comprehend that music could be in a form, which does not represent anything. However, when listened to the classical symphonies, it the precept or the notion of purism became somewhat comprehensible. The nine symphonies (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzB1_2G_QX0), of Beethoven, and Mozart’s Symphony no 40 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTc1mDieQI8), only represented pure music, which did not represent anything but only the true composition of instruments, the sequence of events or plots and event surprises. Another example is of Rachmaninoff’s symphony 2 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvuitFzDxDg). At the beginning it represented everything; however, when listened to them again it represented only music in its most sacred and pure form. The symphonies were entities themselves, rather than representing something. My understating of music, the use of instruments in music, the occurrence and repetition of events, augmented and my intentional object expanded, which further aided me in not only understating the music but also in predicating next musical plots and events.
