Introduction

The hotels and resorts are used by some people for temporary staying purposes on the other hand, some people like to have the entertaining experience of staying at hotel in different cultures. There are many different kind of staying places all around the world, including hotels, resorts, motels etc. These types of hotels in general vary in the services provided. Such a type of hotels is intercontinental hotels which is a brand for luxury hotels. The intercontinental hotels were first founded in 1946 by the Airways of Pan American World. The founder of the intercontinental hotels, Juan Trippe has started this trend in hoteling industry. This founding company now owns by the intercontinental hotels group while this hotel chain operates about 183 hotels in around 60 countries. Thus, a more formal definition of intercontinental hotels is described as “the hotels which incorporates two or more continents or operating in two or continents”.

Description of Issue and its Effect:

Though the intercontinental hotels are luxury hotels and their services are often remarkable but the issues with the services can always be a problem with the customers. Among such service and other issues is the problem of bed bugs. The bed bugs and hotels have been discussed for centuries now.Bed bugs are small brownish oval shaped insects which feed on the blood of humans and animal. The body of bed bugs swell and become of reddish color after the feeding of blood. Bed bugs can not fly but they move quickly on the floors, walls and ceilings. When the conditions are favorable the bed bugs can get mature and fully developed in a small period of time like a month or so. They can also produce three or more generations a year when condition are favorable. The bed bugs do live on human and animal blood but they do not transmit diseases. The bed bugs can enter into a home or hotel through the clothing, luggage and used furniture like beds and couches etc. The bed bugs tend to fit in hiding places like mattresses, edge of carpets, corner inside dressers, cracks in wall papers etc. They chose places where they can have easy access to people in order to extract blood from them at night through biting. Their one time feeding time is between 3-10 minutes while they pierce into the skin and withdraw blood and then crawl back unnoticed. As the bed bugs can live through a few months and even longer in favorable conditions, they can be found in vacant homes. The bed bugs have been found throughout the world but they were very common in U.S. in the early 19th century. The heavy use of pesticides have reduced this number in America in 1940s and 1940s. The prevalence rate in other countries though stayed at a high level. The increase in bed bugs have been seen in the last few years in U.S. due to increase in immigration of the people from developing countries. Thus, in context of the intercontinental hotel the bed bugs come with the guests at hotel.
