Journal Article Analysis MirhaYousuf Statement of the Problem What, exactly, is the problem? In this study the author tried to find out the relation in-between the smoking in work premises and the incentive programs from the companies to control over it; the gap that this study will fill that the previous studies failed they applied their model of compensation for limited amount which may prove to be insufficient. Also the generalize ability of those researches were low due to limited power. Why (briefly) is the problem important? This study will help organizations and the society to avoid the bad effects of the smoking, also organizations can be supported to keep their human capital for long term. This will help to assess the organization that what cost will they have to incur in order to restrain the employees from smoking at average and what compensation will be enough for employee to stay away from smoking. This will also help them to decrease their turnover of employees. Smoking habit enforce the companies to get medical insurance to keep their work flow constant. How (briefly) did the author[s] study the problem? Researcher randomly collected information from 442 employees of different companies about the smoking termination programs that are going on in theirorganizations, and inquired about the compensation they are being offered assigning 884 employees to collect data. He segregated the data according to the employee characteristics such as age race sex and education level and then assessed the rate of cessation in them according to characteristic based group using bio chemical test and compared the results with the compensation offered. He used chi square and Cochran- Mantel- Test to check the homogeneity among the characteristic based groups. Discussion of Outcome/Results What do various outcomes of the study mean in theoretical context? In 2005, a research was conducted on incentive plan by Cochrane but his research results that the incentive does not influence cessation programs. The drawback seems to be the use of small sample to implement the tests. Another thing that looks to be the reason for the negative results is that they did not used high incentive to test the results. Those results were limited due to both of these reasons. Many other studies suggest that the smoking cessation program lead to high smoking rate but the problem with those studies is that those were applied on short term programs . They have taken usually programs of 7 to 9 month there is still room for additional research to find out the perfect structure of program duration and the incentive structure. That will help more successfully implement such program in future. It is possible that the smaller flow or larger flow of incentive after specific period change the result of smoking cessation program. In table 1, he segregated the participant according to characteristics he made field for average age, gender, race , education level, income slabs, smoking habits, stage of change and their self-assessed health status and dependence eon nicotine. He used figure storm test to check the nicotine dependence of both groups. He went through the sampling process as per the given figure 1 and assigned 442 employees in control group and 436 employees were kept Incentive group. In table 2, he judged that what the end points were for different participant and how much of them completed the cessation program and after how much period of cessation program. He segregated the program in in three periods 3-6 months, 9-12 month and 15-18 month. Later in table 3, he have given probable ratios for 9-12 moth program of cessation for both the control and incentive group. In next figure he have given cession rates with respect to different variables including sex, poverty level, smoking status, previous attempts to leave, self-assessed health, and the score of nicotine dependence. The result is that the employee tends to more smoking cessation in incentive group than the information group. Incentive group were also showing more enrolment in smoking cessation than information group as the increase in enrolment for incentive group was 15.4% while the information only group was showing less enrollment with vale 5.4%. He observed the data of 9 to 12 month program and 15 to 18 month program and found that the cessation in 9-12 month program for incentive group was 14.7% while for information group it was 5.0% with the significance of .001. While the cessation rate increased after 15-18 month to 9.4% for incentive group and 3.6% for information only group with same level of significance. Apart from these thing, cessation completion rate for incentive group was also high with value of 10.8% as compare to information only group 2.5%. Results for termination of smoking in first six month for both groups we as follow the incentive group 20.9% and for information only group 11.8%. Therefore, we conclude that the increase in compensation improves the cessation rate of smoking (Kevin et al., 2009) . What do various outcomes of the study mean in practical context? This research will facilitate an organization to continue its smoking cessation program. However, this research has certain limitations in its implementation, as researcher did not consider the job nature to assess the results, which could have been helpful for organization, in selecting the segment of specific profession or job, from the organization to put more focus on them .In addition, as discussed by the author he skipped the portion of compensation structure and the flows sequences and period. It looks to be too much important point and considerable by both the employer and the employee point of view For example, ifthe employee will receive big amount he will be more motivated to go for cessation in one time as compare to installment-based payments. On the other hand, if the employer had to pay the full payment in one time it will cause a financial burden. In addition, if he go for part payment he will not get desired benefits so choosing the best structure of payment is which prove to be suitable for both the employer and employee.
