            The chapter describes the beginning of the culture clash. This clash is between American doctors and Hmong. The clash shows several symbolic aspects of the birth among people of Hmong. The emphasis is given on the placenta or jacket of Hmong baby. This demonstrates the fact that there was incinerated significance in Linda. It is also significant in the chapter that elders make such points of blessing for babies through their names and name giving ceremonies that demonstrates they will never become sick.

            Yes, the family was going through tough traditional customs of Hmong. The cultural clash between Hmong and American doctors put the family in trouble. The Hmong used to believe that after the death of a person, its spirit travels to the residence and put her/him in a jacket, which is buried in the house. The spirit wears that jacket and travels different places and reform in the form of new baby. Therefore, it was difficult experience for the family to bury the children on the floor. It was believed that, such kind of ceremonies in the families is better for the newborn and the family as well. These ceremonies prevent form illness. However, it was clearly stated in the chapter that baby has illness issues. On contrary, American doctors have better way of handling pregnancy through sterilize equipment and cleanliness.
