The chapter describes the beginning of the culture clash. This clash is between American doctors and Hmong who were immigrants and outsider to American culture. The clash shows several symbolic aspects of the birth among people of Hmong. The emphasis is given on the placenta or jacket of Hmong baby. This demonstrates the fact that there was incinerated significance in Linda. It is also significant in the chapter that elders make such points of blessing for babies through their names and name giving ceremonies that demonstrates they will never become sick. However, these rituals were not common in American cultures witnessed by outsiders.
