Need for active listening course:

            Active listening is an important communication skill, which facilitates organizational and the employees in number of ways. For instance, counseling, training and development,   conflict resolution, mentoring and inter group communication and collaboration is essentially facilitated. Currently, in our organization, there is no training course for developing active listening skills for employees. Majority of the employees relies upon self-structured listening pattern, which are no longer affective to address various purposes such as intergroup and peer communication, counseling, tutoring, sales and purchase.

Active listening barriers: Findings of listening quiz

            It is worth noting that an active listening quiz was conducted in the department to assess the level of active listening skills in the employees. Results of the quiz indicate that employees are facing several barriers regarding affective development of active listening skills. These barriers range from distraction to trigger words, vocabulary, limited attention span,   treating discussion as a completion and lack of job flexibility. Physical factors were also analyzed to assess their impact over active listening skills. These factors include but not limited to tiredness, exhaustion and illness. All such barriers negatively affect employees abilities to listen actively which ultimately their performance.

Recommendations:

Course initiation to overcome listening barriers:

            With the consideration of above mentioned discussion, it is recommended that active listening course should introduced in the department which provide proper training and development to the employees to engage in active listening process. For that purpose, services of qualified business communication trainer should be hired. In addition to this, employees should provide with proper material in the form of literature and classroom manuals. I hope that my recommendations will be considered for the best interest of the employees and the department.
