Fahad Alowayshiz ENGL 101: Introduction to College Writing July 29, 2015 Rhetorical Essay: Rape in Ohio shows perils and power of social media The above article titled “Rape in Ohio shows perils and power of social media” by The Denver Post Editorial Board shows us the impact of the social media on daily human lives. The author discusses an incident of a rape case where a young drunk teenager is raped by two football players. Later, when the girl awoke, she found herself naked unknown of what had happened to her. Social media played the part of informing the girl of the incident that occurred the night before. She was victimized and probably in trauma. At the same time, the content shared on social media is an invaluable proof to bring justice to girl and punish the criminals. The Denver Post Editorial Board tries to bring attention of the social media in terms of its damages and benefits, and everyone should be very careful in sharing the contents over the social media like facebook, twitter, etc. CITATION The13 \l 1033 (The Denver Post Editorial Board)Body The author tries to draw the attention of the audience towards the growing impact of social media in our lives. The case explains the power and peril of the social media. The intended audience is the young teenagers with their smart phones and tablets. However, the article is for public too who the unintended audience of the article are. The article tries to bring to notice the issues of using social media to all. The author considers it the responsibility of the public to be careful in sharing the content over the social media. The author tries to bring focus to the responsibility of the people in utilizing the good or bad aspects of social media. However, the article is careful not to draw debate over the power of social media. Furthermore, they are careful to not mention any social media site carefully and talk generally about the impact of the social media. Clearly, author does realize that talking against any specific social media site would just start a debate. It might even cause a social media who the author thwarted to register a hate case against the author. Therefore, the author is careful and responsible. He knows the constraints on the authors, which might change the exigency of the article. While reading the title of the article, one can deduce that the article would discuss both the advantages and disadvantages of the social media on the lives. It seems like the author is going to be very persuasive about the usage of the social media. While reading the article, one questions the knowledge of the editorial board on the impact of social media. The authors only presents the audience with two arguments i.e. the content shared on the social media is invaluable in bringing justice but it victimized the girl CITATION The13 \l 1033 (The Denver Post Editorial Board). However, the purpose of the article was to tell the audience about the power and peril of social media. The reader of the article is the public but it clearly focuses on the younger generation. The purpose of the article was to address the young generation who regardless of the consequences share content on social media. However, the article did not fully able to share the power and peril of the social media to the readers. While reading the title, it seemed like the author is trying to inform the younger generation about the power and peril of the social media whereas based on these assumptions the article phases out the pros and cons of the social media. The significant part is the power and peril of the social media. It can be said that the writers fail to deliver the very argument in the light of the rape case. The authors of the article only mentioned two arguments. One shows the power of the social media while the other shows the peril. Furthermore, the author does not really persuade the readers about the impact of social media. The article just states the fact in light of the rape case. The article stated facts regarding the rape case and did not actually reason out why or why not the certain aspect of social media can be taken as powerful or damaging to one’s personal life. Furthermore, the author does not clearly mention the perils of the social media. The article states that the content shared on the social media victimized the girl CITATION The13 \l 1033 (The Denver Post Editorial Board). It seems like the author of the article is trying to explain the reader about the perils of the social media. Any parent or adult reading the article would feel bad for the young. They would disregard the fact that the girl was drink and would not have been able to find what happened to her if it not was for social media. The article does not clearly describe the peril of the social media however; it does show the disadvantages of drinking. On the other hand, the author also tries to warn the readers on the sentences for such crimes CITATION The13 \l 1033 (The Denver Post Editorial Board). Therefore, the writer emotionally manipulates the readers about the impact of committing crimes such as rape. However, it does not really tell readers on the sentences for user who misuse the social media to victimize another user. Clearly, author has used the word victim for the girl and the author should have to explain the factor of victimization along with the actions for stopping such victimization of persons facing such circumstances. The author is supposed to present the arguments from both the aspects of the social media in terms of power and peril. The tone of the author is neutral and accurate for the article. The author is sensitive toward the girl. However, the editorial board is also careful in not blaming social media. However, the argument of the article is weak. It presents the girl as a victim of social media and using it to show the peril of social media. The author is not very effective in building the accurate argument for the impact of social media in light of the incident. It just states some facts and there is no evidence for the arguments. There is no proof shared by the article in form a picture to show the comments of the rapist on the social media site. Conclusion The article was written to share the power and peril of the social media in light of the rape incident. The argument presented in the article was a way or a method of relating the readers emotionally as well as ethically. However, it did not present any accurate facts on the power and perils of the social media, which needs to be exaggerated. Furthermore, the article seems to deviate from its original subject that was to discuss the power and peril of the social media. It talk about the girl was a victim and the sentence of the rapist which clearly do not show the power or peril of social media. It shows the disadvantages of drinking. Therefore, one can say that the article did not persuade reader on the power or peril of social media. Works Cited BIBLIOGRAPHY The Denver Post Editorial Board.
