This event triggered space war between both powers. Perception was prevailed in US that success of Sputnik, which has launched space shuttle in space, would be able to launch nuclear warhead as well and this capability could endanger US (history.nasa.gov, 2015).

USSR has proved its ability to launch the Sputnik for 6000 kilometer through R-7 booster. In US, less than a year after the launch of sputnik, congress passed the bill for National Defense Education and billions of dollars were allocated for US education system to acquire capability in space technology. These initiated resulted in first human in the space and on the moon as well. In 1950s, US spy plane over USSR provided that intelligence that USSR has advantage over nuclear technology and they can use same rocket to bomb US with nuclear arsenal. This event provided capability to USSR to launch nuclear attack on US and European territory.

This was the most obvious and clear threat form USSR. At that time, US had no capability to launch same kind of nuclear weapon to USSR. Both US authorities as well as nation was confuse because of that lack of balance in capabilities. USSR did not release the photograph of the satellite until five days. Therefore, its appearance remained mystery for the US. Other confusion was spunk weight. It was not clear that what the weight of Spunk is. It was believed that it has 184 pounds as compare to US plans to launch 21.5 pounds.
