The purpose of this analysis is to give an overview for why Barney’s New York should expand into the Middle East, specifically the United Arab Emirates.  Barney’s New York is an American chain of luxury department stores headquartered in New York City, New York and established in 1923.  Barney’s New York sells many high-end luxury brands, such as Yves Saint Laurent, Balenciaga, and Bettanin&Venturi and products that range from men and women’s fashion, fragrances, and home decor.  Barney’s New York currently employs over 1,400 employees and currently, Barney’s New York has over 40 department stores in the United States, but only has five stores outside of the United States, all in Japan (“Barney’s New York, Inc.: Private Company Information”).

The United Arab Emirates has a young and ethnically diverse population, with a median age of 28 years old and is quickly becoming the most popular vacation destination in the world.  The country is also one of the most wealthy emerging nations in the world and is known for its ostentatious displays of wealth, leading to a hunger for luxury retail.  In 2013, the Emirati apparel industry grew by 4.8% (valuing $6.1 billion) and is forecasted to increase 29.5% to a value of $7.9 billion by 2018 (Apparel Retail Industry Profile: United Arab Emirates, p. 2).

The growth in the apparel retail industry has led to Lamborghini, Saks Fifth Avenue, and many other luxury brands and extensions flourishing in the market and with the strong growth in the apparel retail industry in recent years
