The author defines two important terms in this article related to male and female. She focus that women are always marked. The term marked means, which is so special and talk able. She said that for women everything is special and talk able she observed this in a conference room when she observed three women who were talking about their dresses, shoes, hair, nails, etc. However, eight men in this conference room were not talking about these things because they are unmarked. Unmarked means, which are not special and even, not talk able. Men do not bother and considered special of talking about these things.

  1. What happened in the business meeting gave her the idea that marking was happening?

When suddenly she saw eight men around the table she stunned why she is only observing the women there were men also in this room. Then she thought that men are unmarked because they have a little bit freedom to choose. She observed that all the men in this room wore dark, comfortable, flat and closed shoes. All men have worn blue or brown slacks. In short, there is a standard for men. While women have freedom to choose their haircuts, dressing, shoes etc. there is no standard for women. In addition, she also mentioned that women are focused by everyone. That is why marking was happing in this business room.
